DEAR EDITOR
I am quite enthused to observe the efforts by the government and more particularly by the President, for whom I want to applaud for genuinely trying to root out corruption and financial irregularity at government entities, with the more recent actions against Customs Anti Narcotic Unit and the Customs and Trade Administration of the Guyana Revenue Authority.
But then again what about the City Council of Georgetown? Will they continue to ignore the interest of the property owners and the rates that they pay from their hard earned income?
How could a clique of senior officers be allowed to use the Council’s money as if it their won? Giving themselves millions of dollars in interest free loans and advances time and again, whilst the municipality pays huge interest rates for overdraft facilities that they are forced to utilize, giving themselves enormous financial rewards for not proceeding on their vacation leave, in contravention of Council’s directives, bumping up their salaries to super salary grades without justification or authorization and a whole host of other serious irregularities that have been exposed by a recent special audit.
Surely the Minister who has responsibility for the Georgetown Municipality could follow the Iead being set by the President, examine the results of recent audits and deal sternly with those recalcitrant financial and other administrators at City Hall, and not let politics take precedence over prudent fiscal management at City Hall.
