Leatherback released after caught in fishermen’s seines
Some fishermen of Domburg, Wakenaam had an unusual catch when a sea turtle found its way into their seines in the Essequibo River shortly after midday yesterday. This event attracted scores of islanders who all sought to get a view of the reptile.
The leatherback turtle appeared to have strayed away from its usual habitat, presumably Shell Beach in the North West District, and got entangled in the fishermen’s seines. The fishermen pulled the hefty 500 pounds reptile to the shore and then freed it of the seine which was badly damaged.
The turtle sustained some small cuts and bruises on its fins from the ropes in which it became entangled. After the turtle was freed it was released into the Essequibo River in the afternoon.
