The Guyana Arts and Crafts Association is expected to play a pivotal role in Carifesta X, according to Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad.
His comments came during a meeting with the executive board of the association on Thursday at the Ministry’s boardroom.
During the meeting, the Minister applauded the Association for the magnitude of accomplishment and encouraged the members to get involved with Carifesta activities.
He said that the association is expected to play a major role in Carifesta since over the years Guyana’s arts and craft have dominated the market at Carifesta and Guyana is known for producing excellent quality arts and craft products.
Since its establishment, the Guyana Arts and Craft Producers Association has received numerous recognitions, having met with several stakeholders including Government Ministers and diplomats.
Several issues were highlighted at the meeting on Thursday. The Association was told to analyse the market and to improve on their marketing strategy.
As part of their plan, the Association will host demonstration of craft production and hope to benefit from other countries’ skills through similar activity.
The executive of the association will meet with the Chief Executive Officer of the Carifesta Secretariat, Mr. Nigel Dharamlall, today to discuss the way forward.
Minister Prashad also challenged the association to initiate plans for the next Guyana Gift and Craft Show which is proposed for early next year, 2009.
They were also challenged to utilize the Guyana Tourism Authority website to market their products since arts and craft are integrally link to tourism. The President of the Association, Mr. Young, gave a brief summary of activities accomplished.
Among issues highlighted was the need for copy right laws and/or patent of products.
