A distraught father is questioning whether moral values and genuine care for humanity still exist within the society since, according to him, his handicapped daughter was forced to endure a dreadful fate at the hand of a male neighbour.
According to the man who hails from a West Bank Demerara village, his daughter, who is now 22 years old, was brutally raped by the neighbour who now wants to appease the matter with monetary compensation.
“I never thought I would live to see the day when somebody would ask me that…What amount of money can you offer me for what happened to my child? How long will the society continue with this behaviour…?” the man questioned.
The visibly agitated man said that although he is an ardent Muslim and accepts that he will be “tested and tried”, nothing could have prepared him for what happened to his daughter.
The man said that his daughter who is the eldest of his 10 children – eight girls and two boys – was diagnosed with a bone disease at birth and thus as she grew she was unable to function as a normal child. Due to her incapacitation, the man said that the child is unable to walk without the aid of a walker.
According to the mother of the handicapped victim, she only learnt of the unfortunate incident on Saturday last although it occurred since last Thursday.
The woman explained that it was Saturday morning when she observed her daughter vomiting and appeared to be in a state of discomfort.
In order to determine the root of the child’s distress, the woman said that she questioned her as to what was wrong and was taken aback when the child, with much grief, begged not to be beaten.
It was at this point the mother said that the child recounted the heartrending ordeal she suffered at the hands of the young man who is well-known to them.
According to the woman, her daughter related the gory details of how she was attacked and restrained by the perpetrator, adding that at the time she (the mother) was engaged in prayer and hadn’t a clue as to what had befallen her child.
This newspaper understands that it was around dusk last Thursday that the handicapped woman, with the aid of a walker, was tending to some laundry at the back of her parents’ West Bank home when she was attacked by the neighbour.
According to the mother, during the course of her prayer she had beckoned to her daughter to come inside because it was getting dark, an appeal she (the young woman) responded to by saying she was almost done.
But even before the young woman could have completed her chore, this newspaper was informed that the man launched his attack, first covering his victim’s mouth, preventing her from screaming, before he wrestled her to the ground to carry out his perverted intention.
The perpetrator, however, did not leave his bewildered and traumatised victim until he menacingly instructed her not to tell anyone.
In adherence, the young woman told no one and nearly succeeded in concealing her dreadful experience even in her handicapped state.
On learning of what transpired, the mother of the young woman said that she immediately called her husband who was not at home at the time, informing him of the sordid fact.
The man said that he rushed home in an unnerved frame of mind and together with his wife and child visited the nearest police station where the matter was reported. The 25-year-old perpetrator was soon arrested and even confessed after it was confirmed by a medical official that the young woman was indeed sexually molested.
According to the father of the young woman, he has since sought the help of the Human Services Ministry to help counsel his daughter who has since taken on a demeanour that suggests that she views the world as an uncaring one.
And though the matter is expected to be brought before the courts shortly, the perpetrator and his family have been desperately trying to end the matter with money, this newspaper has learnt.
A sum of $65,000 has so far been offered but according to the father of the victim he is currently unable to accept such a deal since that would mean that he could place a value on the life of his daughter and possibly his other seven daughters as well.
