Three bandits escaped with a quantity of local and foreign currency and a licensed firearm at around 21:45 hrs on Wednesday after holding popular businessman Johnny Pires and his son at gunpoint.
The robbery occurred at Johnny P’s Supermarket in Aubrey Barker Street, South Ruimveldt.
A police release said that Mr. Pires and his son, Johnny Pires Jnr., were closing up the premises when they were confronted by the men, two of whom had handguns.
The robbers relieved their victims of a licensed pistol and ammunition, a sum of local and foreign currency, and other articles before escaping.
Kaieteur News had spoken to Mr. Pires shortly after the robbery, and the businessman had alleged that the robbers had only taken his gym bag.
He had said that the bandits had fled on foot into Festival City.
In February 2006, police had investigated a shooting incident at the same location, where a bullet had pierced the southern glass door of the upper flat of the premises.
A bullet was also reportedly found in Pires’s pick-up.
