The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated is cautioning electricity consumers to utilise the services of a certified electrician whenever the need arises to install extended electricity from their houses for any purpose.
The power company issued the call in the wake of the electrocution of Sharon Jairam of Block C, Pamona, Essequibo Coast, last Saturday. Jairam had gone to the assistance of two of her sheep which she observed were in some distress during a downpour.
The power company has expressed condolences to the relatives and friends of the dead woman over the unfortunate incident.
According to the GPL, investigations have revealed that a defective drop cord with seven joints, five of which were insulated with paper masking tape and two were exposed, was being used to supply power to a chicken pen.
One of the seven joints on the drop cord came loose causing the energised conductor to come into contact with the metal mesh enclosing the pen.
The GPL said that when Jairam responded to the sheep exhibiting signs of distress, she in fact touched not only the animal which were being shocked but also the electrified mesh of the chicken pen.
Unfortunately, she did not manage to disengage herself from either source of electricity.
It was found that the fuse protecting the circuit did not rupture because it was not fuse wire but a piece of conductor from a cable.
“GPL regrets having to use this unfortunate incident to call on consumers to exercise utmost caution when using electricity. If you have to extend power permanently or for an extended period from your certified wiring, then utilize the services of a certified electrician.”
The company added that in the present rainy season the importance of safety when using electricity cannot be emphasised.
“We wish to make a call to all consumers who have extended electricity from their houses for any purpose, including security lights, to have a certified electrician check the state of the extension cords. Have the electrician check and ensure that your fuses are appropriate if you use fuse protection,” the GPL stated in a press release.
The power company also advised that in areas famous for illegal connections, persons recognise the dangers posed to the innocent during the current rainy season.
