The law enforcement agencies will not stand by and allow the opposition People’s National Congress Reform to run amok in the city under the cloak of exercising their constitutional rights, said Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee at a press conference yesterday.
The Minister noted that the police must be commended for exercising restraint during the illegal marches organized by the main opposition on May 8, May 12 and May 15 in the city.
The marches occurred despite the police not granting permission.
“No one is being or will be denied the right to protest or to march. What is and will be denied is the right to engage in unlawful marches and practices and to infringe on the rights of other citizens who are desirous of living and working in peace and tranquility,” Minister Rohee told the media.
He explained that he is certain that if the PNCR were in office they would have taken the same position that the present government is taking with regards to illegal marches.
The main opposition had criticised the police force for acting on political directives from the government in the execution of their duties.
The most scathing attack came on the heels of the transfer of two senior police officers, which the PNCR claimed was done because they refused to obey an order to shoot at the protestors.
Rohee said that there should be no problems when the police seek to exercise their lawful duty and refuse to be terrorized, intimidated and threatened by opposition politicians and undercover elements, hostile to the law enforcement agencies.
“If Mr. Corbin wants to project himself as a ‘Bad John’ by engaging in bravado and misleading his supporters into believing that unlawful acts are lawful and constitutional, he’s wrong because the law has a long arm and the police will not hesitate to deal with those who break the law,” the Home Affairs Minister said.
And with CARIFESTA just a few months away and in light of threats by the opposition to make the event unmanageable, the Minister announced that preparations of a security plan are moving apace.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs has noted that public statements to the effect that ‘we will not make it comfortable for CARIFSTA’ and ‘we will resort to serious protest to make CARIFESTA unmanageable’ have been taken to higher levels beyond mere declaration,” Rohee said.
He added that in this regard the administration has noted that there have been two attacks so far on CARIFESTA preparations.
According to Rohee, the first attack was the unsuccessful attempts by PNCR activists to disrupt the launch of the mega event at the Bank of Guyana and the recent failed attempt to burn down the offices of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, which is the focal point for CARIFESTA activities.
According to Rohee, these events are not only coincidental as regards the target but moreso as regards the extremist political protests on the streets by the opposition.
“I leave the public to draw its own conclusion. Incidentally, I have not heard Mr. Corbin and the PNCR condemn this dastardly act,” the Home Affairs Minister stated.
