The semi-finals of the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) Inter-Secondary school impromptu speaking competition is set for today with St Joseph High taking on Annandale Secondary and Queen’s College clashing with School of the Nations.
The competing schools became eligible to be a part of the semi-finals after victory in qualifying matches last Tuesday.
The matches saw Queen’s College facing off with Central High and St Joseph High taking on St Rose’s High.
In the first contest of that day, Queen’s College defeated Central High by amassing 776 points to their opponents’ 644.
The topics selected by Central High were: If you had to be someone else for a month, who would you be and why? Should smoking be banned in public places? Is peace possible?
Queen’s College selected the topics: The eyes are the mirror to the soul; Should young offenders have to go to jail? Is cheating at school a problem?
In the second match-up, St Joseph High overcame St Roses High, 684 points to 549 points.
The winning team addressed the topics: Are the number of school hours reasonable?
Television commercials; What I wish to know about the future.
St Rose’s High dealt with: Should the internet be censored? I am thankful for…; What can be done to stop road carnage?
The judges for those matches were Ms Magda Pollard, Mr Geoffrey Smith and Dr Joyce Jonas.
