Torrential rain in the city yesterday left several streets in the capitol under water and washed out the first National women’s cricket trial match at the Police ground Eve Leary.
The selectors are hoping to have three limited over trial games before they select the touring squad to represent Guyana in the next regional senior Women’s Cricket tournament in July in Jamaica.
According to Administrator of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Savitri Persaud, the second trial game is still fixed for today at the Police ground.
Persaud was not sure if three trial games will still be played and informed that she expected to be updated by the national selectors today.
“If the rain washes out tomorrow (today) the selectors will make a decision on postponing the matches and how many games they will play before the pick the team,” Persaud informed late yesterday afternoon.
The trials were originally fixed for last week but were postponed due to the inclement weather.
Guyana did not participate in last year’s regional tournament in Barbados and lost the opportunity of their players being eligible for the West Indies team which is scheduled to tour Europe from June 21 to July 14.
The regional lasses with play 12 matches on their tour to Ireland, Holland and England.
West Indies, who placed fifth in the last Women’s World Cup in 2005 in South Africa, have not played a Women’s match in three years and it is understood that the team for the 2009 Women’s World Cup in Australia early next year will be selected from the regional tournament in Jamaica.
Guyana will be without West Indies Test player Indomatie Goordial-John who is now available for selection for the St Vincent team. The all-rounder, who is enjoying a prolific season in the Windward Island, has been residing there with her Vincentian husband since August last year.
