Its now down to the final two games of the Digicel/Carib Sweet 16 knockout football championship and set to contest what is being touted as a fierce championship match, are city sides Sunburst Camptown and arch rivals, Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
Both teams won epic battles in their respective semi-final matches which were played before a bumper crowd on Tuesday afternoon at the Plaisance Community Centre ground.
Camptown held off a spirited performance from the home team 2-0 whose supporters were very energetic and vociferous for most of the clash until the Campbellville team was finally able to break the deadlock after 77 minutes of exchanges.
Striker, Marvin Joseph, who has been one of their consistent scorers, banged in the first goal for the visitors which brought some amount of calm to the ground, the Plaisance supporters prior to that were very much into the action cheering their team on.
Camptown, who are leading in the Premier league in the city, were enjoying the better possession and creating numerous chances but were guilty of not making use of them on a consistent basis. Plaisance on the other hand had a few which they also could not bury.
Plaisance, never looked a major threat to the city side that sealed their place in the final in the 90th minute of the game, Telson McKinnon just back from representing Guyana at the CFU under-20 World Cup qualifying competition in Grenada was finally able to sink one of the many chances which came his way.
This final will be Camptown’s first in many years and they will be aiming to go all the way.
The GDF contesting the first semi-final against the resurgent BK International Western Tigers prevailed after a bruising battle by the lone goal of their battle, Stellon David, the man with the golden boot securing their place in the final with a well taken free kick in the 67th minute which eluded the grasp of goalkeeper Rolex Scott. It was a well struck left foot shot from 30 meters out.
The Tigers, who turned back the challenge of Alpha earlier in the championship, created many opportunities and were all over their opponents but as has been the case in the past, they messed up in the attacking third to their own detriment in the end.
They played all the football and were fancy at times but as they say in cricket, you have to take wickets to win so in football you have to score goals to be triumphant.
That the Tigers did not do but the Army ensured that they buried at least one which was all they needed to advance to yet another final. The respective losers will face off in the third place game which will precede the final.
The winning team will cart off the championship trophy and $300,000.
The organisers and teams are trying to find common ground in terms of a date for the final, this Saturday or Monday. Both GDF and Camptown are slated to match skills in a crucial Premier League game tomorrow at the Tucville ground, a match that will determine who takes pole position in the points table. The two teams will then have to battle in the championship match of this knock-out competition on Saturday.
President of Camptown Troy Mendonca has written a letter to the President of the East Demerara Football Association asking for the final to be played on Monday instead of Saturday.
A decision is likely to be made sometime today.
