Saytoo, a 30-year-old minibus driver accused of causing the death of Ramand Prasad, was placed on $100,000 bail by Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty, yesterday, when he appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
Saytoo was not required to plead to the indictable charge when he made his first appearance.
However, with the decision to take the matter summarily, yesterday, he was asked to plead and pleaded not guilty.
Until his court appearance he was on $50,000 station bail. It is alleged that on February 14, last, at 8:30 am. Saytoo who drove minibus BHH 7602 was proceeding south on the eastern side of the public road at a fast speed when he struck Prasad who reportedly rode from the western side of a gas station and ended up in the path of the minibus.
He was knocked off his motor cycle, and hurled some 30 feet away. Prasad was picked up by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced death on arrival.
In his application for bail, counsel Haimraj Rajkumar said that the defendant is married and is the sole breadwinner for his family.
Prosecutor Owsald Pitt, however, strongly objected to bail saying that the offence is a serious one which carries a sentence of imprisonment.
He added that the defendant had appeared before the court for other traffic matters and may likely tamper with the witnesses.
The defendant will make his next appearance on June 3.
