Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday released a Hadfield Street man on bail after he appeared in court for forging the signature of Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee.
The accused 31-year-old Garry Frank, made his first appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on an allegation on May 15, with intent to defraud, he presented to a police officer one vehicle tint permit knowing the same to be false.
It is also alleged that some time between January 1 and January 31, last, he conspired with others to forge the signature of the Home Affairs Minister.
In addition, Frank was charged with driving a tinted motor vehicle on May 15 without a permit. To all three charges he pleaded not guilty.
He was represented by defence lawyer, Patrice Henry, who in making a bail application for his client, told the court that his client is employed as a chauffeur, and is a married man with one child.
He told the court that Frank is also a first time offender. Henry added that from the instructions he received, his client did make an application to the Home Affairs Ministry for a tint permit.
Henry asked that the court make an order for the police to return Frank’s vehicle, since it is his livelihood.
However Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that they were not opposing bail. The prosecutor said the vehicle would be handed over when the tint is removed.
Matthews said that on the day in question Frank was stopped on Mandela Avenue and when asked by a police rank about the tints on his vehicle he produced a tint permit.
However, Matthews said checks with Home Affairs Ministry shows that Frank never applied for a tint permit.
As such, for the charges of conspiracy with intent to defraud and with forging signature, Frank was placed on $85,000 bail each and on $10,000 bail for driving a tinted motor vehicle without a tint permit.
He is expected to return to court on July 14.
