Man charged with causing death

51-year-old Ronald Faria, of 50 Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara, was yesterday placed on $500,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

The prosecution is contending that, on May 16, at Sheriff Street, Campbellville, the accused drove motor car PJJ 5552 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Nazim Alli. Faria pleaded not guilty.

Attorney-at-Law Euclin Gomes, who is representing Faria and who made the bail application, told the court that his client, a father of five, is gainfully employed as a dispatcher at JR Taxi Service.

He added that Faria has never been involved in any accident prior to the one in question, and has been driving for more than 10 years.

According to Gomes, when the accident occurred it was at around 2:00 am and the deceased walked suddenly into the path of Faria’s vehicle.

The lawyer then requested reasonable bail, since he claimed it was unlikely that Faria would be a flight risk.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that, at the time the accident occurred, several persons were on the road, including the deceased.

Faria’s next court appearance is fixed for July 16.
