Sunburst Camptown stormed into the lead of the Cellink Plus Premier League Championship following a convincing 5-1 win over Uprising when the challenge for this years championship continued on day 10 at the Tucville ground on Sunday night. The night capper saw defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United easing past Fruta Conquerors 3-1.
Camptown’s win, their 4th in 5 matches along with a draw, keep their unbeaten record intact while Uprising, who won the division-one championship, have continued to struggle at the higher level, suffering their 4th defeat in 5 games.
Leading the Campbellville team to their win was the hard working and inspirational Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod with a double including an 83rd minute penalty. His first which came on the stroke of half time was a memorable one. It was a corner kick that swirled into the back of the nets without the help of anyone else.
Lance Ralston had opened the scoring in the 29th. Mervin Joseph added yet another one to his tally in the 75th, while nippy forward Dexter Mollyneaux sealed the deal 2 minutes later. The score line could have been much wider had Camptown scored the many more chances they created, quite a few being straightforward. Mark Lawrence pulled one back for Uprising 5 minutes before the final whistle.
Alpha, not their dominant self, are slowly regaining that dominance as they blanked Conquerors 3-1. They scored at critical periods in the game nullifying any thoughts the home team had of striking back.
Quincy Madramootoo was the first to get things going for the defending champs after 29 minutes of exchanges. The lead doubled with a Travis Martin goal one minute to the break.
Dwayne Jacobs virtually sealed the deal for Alpha in the 66th minute when he skillfully evaded the offside trap which caught the Alpha frontline for almost the entire night, and clinically placed the ball passed the advancing Akel Clarke in goal for Conquerors.
Conquerors all along though, were trying their best to get on the score sheet but were not given the chance too often to do so, owing to some solid defensive work in the backline led by Kelvin McKenzie.
But the Fruta side were finally able to penetrate and score in the 70th minute, Paul Bobb hitting the network. With 30 minutes to game time, Conquerors were harbouring thoughts of drawing even closer to their opponents score but that was never to be, as score remained the same when the final whistle sounded.
When play continues on Friday at the same venue, another big double header is carded. The feature clash will see the Guyana Defence Force matching skills with Camptown with the curtain raiser featuring Pele and GFC.
Following is the point’s standings after 5 games each.
