The battle lines have been drawn once again and fans are in for some more exciting and thrilling football compliments of the Carib/Digicel Sweet 16 knockout championship which will see the semi-finals contested tonight at the Plaisance Community Centre ground.
Set to face off for the two places in the championship match will be city sides, B K International Western Tigers and the Guyana Defence Force, in the evening’s first match-up.
Sunburst Camptown will face off against home team Plaisance in the feature game tonight, the respective winners booking their place in the final set for Monday. The losers will still have the chance to play in the third and fourth place game.
In respective quarter-final matches, Western Tigers needled a game Victoria Kings, compliments of a Gavin Wilson 87th minute strike. The Kings were all over their city counterparts but were unlucky, missing quite a number of opportunities.
Camptown were 3-2 winners over BV Triumph United, who turned up the heat in the final minutes but it was a bit too late, Camptown looking shaky in the dying moments of the clash.
Kwame La Fleur (20), Mervin Joseph (28) and Reshawn Sandiford in the 84th minute, netted for Camptown while BV got theirs from Garth Nedd (66) and Junior Price 4 minutes before the end.
The final two quarter-final matches were just as tight as the previous two. The performances of all the teams especially the East Demerara clubs have been commendable to date and fans are impressed and satisfied with what they have seen despite the fact there is still much room for improvement.
Ann’s Grove too, can count themselves unlucky not to have advanced to the semis after losing to the mighty GDF in extra time by a single goal. Striker, Stellon David it was who sent the Army team through with his 104th minute goal in a match that saw the ball hitting the upright and cross bar of the goal at an unusual rate.
But the match of the tournament so far was the final quarter-final battle between Bakewell Buxton Stars and underdogs Plaisance, it was the under dogs who turned back the challenge of the Bakewell boys on a rainy night, last Saturday.
Penalty kicks were needed to separate the sides after they played to an exciting 1-1 tie in regulation and extra time. Buxton it was who took the lead in the 2nd half after a goalless stalemate in the first.
Eon Garnett sent them ahead in the 55th minute to silence the Plaisance supporters. But they did not remain quiet for too long as Conrad Quintyn drew them level with a beautiful strike 4 minutes later, sending their supporters in a frenzy as they stuck with their side despite the rain.
After the final whistle went the score remained unchanged and the ensuing period of extra time failed to break the deadlock. The home team prevailed at penalty kicks 5-3.
Thus far, the action has been very intense and that trend is not about to change by any means, as a matter of fact it will get even tighter given the match-ups.
While Camptown would be fancying their chances of advancing to their first sweet 16 final and first final in a number of years, Plaisance will also be harboring similar thoughts and with crowd support favoring the home team an intriguing match is on the cards.
The opening fixture between GDF and Tigers is a potential thriller between the former Premier League side who have a point to prove and have been in ripping form in this tournament having already disposed of ‘The Hammer’, Alpha United.
They will fancy their chances of taking care of the Army who on the other hand will be aiming for yet another knockout crown.
Kick off time this evening is 18:00hrs.
