Doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation are battling to save the life of a Mahaica woman who was the victim of a brutal rape yesterday morning.
The 34-year-old mother of one was found by her husband, at around 10:30 hours yesterday, in her home lying in a pool of blood.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman was attacked by a known villager.
The woman’s husband told this Newspaper that, on returning home from work at around 10:30 hours, he found his wife sprawled on the floor with their two-year-old child crying next to her. “When I walk in I see she deh crying and blood deh all over she, so I tell she ah coming back, ah going to de Police station fuh help,” the man said.
By that time, other relatives were informed and they began making efforts to get the woman to the hospital. However, the man said, when he visited the Mahaica Police Station to make a report and seek assistance, he was told that there was no Police rank available. “Two times I run to and from de Police station and is de same thing dem tell me …some neighbours get a vehicle and decide fuh carry she to de hospital and is then we see a Police coming fuh go with we to de hospital,” the relative recalled. All the way to the hospital, the man said, the woman kept lapsing in and out of consciousness.
This newspaper has been reliably informed that the woman sustained several stab wounds about her body, including to her head, back, hands, abdomen and genital area.
One relative opined that, judging from the injuries the woman sustained, it seems as if the perpetrator was trying to kill her so that she would not live to tell the horrific tale.
“From how the stab deh pon she body, is like she de fighting back with de man but he de want kill she,” the relative said.
Up to press time yesterday the woman was still in the operation theatre of the Georgetown Public Hospital and relatives were still hoping for the best.
However, the perpetrator was still at large.
Meanwhile, a Police source has confirmed that there was only one Police rank at the station at the time of the incident.
The source claims that the rank took a report on the matter and a detective rank was subsequently contacted.
He reportedly escorted the woman to the hospital.
