President Bharrat Jagdeo is not inclined to lift the suspension of the broadcast licence for CNS Channel 6, but would rather the matter be handled in court.
On Friday, the President, who had suspended the licence after the station repeated a live call-in programme during which a woman caller threatened the life of the Head of State, admitted that he had received a letter from the station seeking a meeting.
Jagdeo, during a press conference on Friday, disclaimed knowledge of any petition to lift the suspension.
The official was not sure that a meeting with the channel’s management would be productive at this time, since the station has moved to the courts. President Jagdeo said that his preference would be for the matter to be dealt with in court.
The channel, with its controversial and highly popular “Voice of the People” live call-in programme, was handed a four-month suspension by the President for the breaches. There were several calls for the suspension to be lifted, with some feeling that the punishment was too harsh.
CNS 6’s owner, businessman Chandra Narine Sharma, has moved to the court to have the suspension lifted.
