For the past few weeks Guyanese have been bombarded by stories of murders, accidents and horrific deaths, but a life-changing event turned a simple, hard-working sales representative into a modern-day hero.
Some time after 14:00hrs yesterday, the screams of his 66-year-old neighbour, Joyce Lewis, attracted Abdel Lewis to what was an obvious call for help.
When he got to the top storey of their lot 2604 Kaikan Street, Festival City residence, he noticed the elderly woman attempting to break into her godson’s room, because she suspected that something was amiss.
After struggling with the door, which was barricaded with a barrel, and forcing it open, Abdel came upon a sight that he would probably never be able to forget.
His neighbour, 18-year-old Mark Weeks, was dangling from the rafters of the ceiling, a makeshift noose fashioned from a sturdy piece of outdoor telephone cable wrapped around his neck.
According to Lewis, his instincts immediately kicked into high gear, and he lifted the almost lifeless youth to slacken the pressure on his neck, then freed him of the noose.
Despite no formal training in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, his numerous hours of television programmes proved vital, as he did what he could to guarantee Weeks a new lease on life.
Weeks was subsequently taken to the Davis Memorial Hospital, where professional attendants managed to ensure his survival.
When this newspaper visited the home of the suicidal youth, his godmother, when asked about a reason for Weeks wanting to kill himself, said that she had only a short while before “quarrelled” with the young man.
She stated that the reason for accosting the youth was because he shared a relationship with a very young girl and he wanted to take her into the home.
According to Ms Lewis, they were young and she did not want to encourage, “any slackness.”
The young man apparently became enraged at her disapproval, and went into the yard only to return and lock himself in the room.
“All I hear is the wood creaking, and when I push de door it lock, and I suspect something wrong so I scream fuh help.” Ms Lewis stated.
