The Lusignan Prison, in collaboration with Food For The Poor Guyana Inc., has undertaken a project, and the Guyana Prison Service has undertaken a project to plant fruit and vegetables at the prison. The collaboration also aims to strengthen the Prison’s agriculture self-sufficient programme and provide the inmates with an opportunity to become skilled in plant and animal husbandry.
The project started last year June with a programme to fence the plot, and in December two acres of pumpkins were cultivated.
Last March, the prisons reaped 750 kg of pumpkins, the largest weighing 13kg. At presently the land is being prepared for the cultivation of bora, boulangers, peppers and other kitchen crops.
Against this backdrop, it must be noted that, over the last 17 years of existence in Guyana, Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc has made numerous tangible donations amounting to millions of dollars of agricultural supplies to a number of organizations, entities, and even individuals.
Some of the recipients were Guyana School of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture, National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI), Guyana Prison Service, New Opportunity Corps (NOC), and a number of individuals.
