May 18, 2008 Letters
Dear Editor,
I continue to observe evolving events over the years, and I have become increasingly disillusioned by many things. I make one such reference to Ms. Ali’s letter in Kaieteur News, 6th May 2008, captioned “Ms. Gillian Burton is a true trade unionist.”
Those who supported Ms. Burton’s presidency, thinking they would have had a true labour leader, forgot that Ms Burton was a PNC candidate in the last election. It was therefore not surprising, and only a matter of time before the PNC took over the TUC.
Ms. Ali proceeded to attack Ms Mc Donald because she called on the TUC leadership to abide by the rules. It was encouraging to hear Ms. Mc Donald speaking out and explaining the roles of the General Secretary and President.
Ms. Ali’s attack was unnecessary, since there is no harm asking unions to do the right things. Trade unions should be protecting the rights of workers, and to do so they have to abide by the rules.
The behaviour of some workers at the TUC rally towards Prime Minister Sam Hinds was disgraceful. Unlike what Ms. Burton wanted people to believe, it was not “workers democracy” to invite the PM to the rally then turn around and insult him.
There were many presidents before Ms. Burton, and none treated Government officials that way.
It would have been better for Ms. Burton to use “workers democracy” to tell the PM about workers deprivations and make specific demands.
Ms. Burton should do the decent thing and apologise. FITUG is right to say that the Workers’ Day was used by the TUC to give the PNC a platform for their politics.
Anyone who was there would have seen Mr. Corbin, who spoke at the Rally, sitting on the platform as the crowd insulted the PM.
