I came home to find my granddaughter emptying her piggy bank. Curious I asked her what she was going to buy this time with her small savings.
Her answer surprised me. She answered that the money was not for her. I pressed. “For whom was it?”
She said, “It is for Mr. Corbin and President Bharrat.”
I asked why she would want to be giving her small savings to the two most powerful persons in the country.
With all the innocence of a child she said, “Things tight for both of them, grandpa.”
“How do you know that?” I asked
She explained: “Robert Corbin car went away and left him on Thursday and the poor fellow had to work all the way back to his workplace. He could not afford a ‘special’ which is only $300, and he could not even manage a bus fare.”
This she said prompted her to empty her piggy bank and donate the money to Uncle Bob so that in the future he would not have to walk all that distance to work.
“Okay,” I said, “but what that has to do with the President. Why do you feel that you have to give the President money?”
“He needs it to buy food,” she replied, “things are so hard for him and on Friday he went without anything to eat.”
I decided against telling her that the President was joining world leaders in a fast for debt relief. In her innocence she showed her concern for our country’s two most powerful political leaders and it was a concern that I did not wish to deprive her. People should care for their leaders and should try to show greater respect and concern for them.
The more I thought about this incident, the more I realized how it provided the answers to our problems. Here was the Leader of the Opposition walking almost two miles to work. And here was the most powerful man in the country, the President, denying himself food for one day so as to show his support for persons around the world who suffer because their countries have to pay back huge sums to creditors.
I believe that by pure accident, by the coincidence of the leader of the opposition’s walk and the President’s fast, that we have a solution to the high cost of fuel and food in the country. The first part of the solution is provided by Mr. Corbin. The answer is:Walk More.
The second part of the solution is provided by Mr. Jagdeo. It is: Eat Less.
So there is your response to the high fuel and food prices: Walk More; Eat Less
The last time the Peeper went to buy meat at the markets he almost fainted when he was told that the price of chicken was $300 per lb. The Peeper was back again this week in the market, this time to buy greens, not meat. When I was told the prices I almost fainted again.
Amazingly, the prices for vegetables have dropped appreciably. For it to be sold cheaper would be to give it away free. Tomatoes which a few weeks ago were being sold at $240 per lb are now going at $60 per lb. Three large boulangers were going at $200, and squash for a mere $15. The price of cabbage was also down. The only prices that did not seem to decline were peppers and fruits.
The reason why prices have declined has to do with the light showers that we are having, May-June is usually associated with high prices and in recent years, the rainy season has been characterized by high intensity rainfall.
Whenever there is heavy rainfall the price of greens and vegetables usually rise in the markets because of supply shortfalls. However, because the rain so far for this rainy season has been light, it has been favourable to our cash-crop farmers and thus this has led to a mini bumper crop, at least for the past week. It is a good sign for consumers, let us hope it holds.
