Venues in Georgetown and its environs which have been selected to host delegations that will be performing in Guyana during the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) X in August are being upgraded.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony during a press briefing yesterday said a contract has been awarded for upgrades on the eastern and western pavilions of the National Park at a cost of $8M and $13M respectively.
At the Sophia Exhibition Complex, another venue for hosting CARIFESTA, work is ongoing to provide easy ingress and egress. The Minister said another contract of $2.3M has also been awarded for a culvert at Dennis Street.
The Guyana National Stadium at Providence which is earmarked for the opening ceremony will be equipped with a modern lighting system that will illuminate the venue at nights.
Foundation works have been ongoing since February, to create support structures for lights which will be installed at six locations around the National Stadium. These works are about 90 percent complete, according to Minister Anthony.
He said MUSCO Lighting Company of the United States of America, which was awarded the contract, will soon be in Guyana to install the lights to a height of 160 feet.
The MUSCO lighting company which supplies permanent or temporary lighting for major sport events and stadiums around the world was awarded the contract to undertake installation process.
Recently head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon announced that Cabinet gave the green light to the procurement of a US$605,519 stage for the festival. Minister Anthony at today’s press briefing disclosed that the contract has been awarded to Tom Cat, a United States Company.
CARIFESTA X will be hosted for 10 days in Guyana beginning from August 22. More than 24 countries in the Caribbean, Latin, South America and further afield have confirmed participation and this number is likely to grow leading up to the festival.
The total participating delegation that will be in Guyana for CARIFESTA has so far amounted to 1376, while the Guyana contingent will be 2000 strong.
