The work of encoders at GECOM is extremely unacceptable, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Donald Ramotar, said yesterday.
Speaking to the media at Freedom House, Ramotar said that the Elections Commission needs to accelerate its internal work.
“The situation for the encoding continues to be very unsatisfactory; only 108,377 or 28.3 per cent of the completed registration done in this field was entered in the database. They have about 100 encoders working two shifts from January to May and this is all that has been achieved.”
The PPP, he said, has noted that the pace of work in editing and encoding information from the field ‘is too slow’ and would surely delay the process of producing a new list that is necessary for local government elections
A slight improvement has been recognised since a previous meeting, Ramotar said, but to date the situation remains ‘unsatisfactory.’
“GECOM completed 383,053 in the field but the editing team completed 163,157 (37.1 per cent). This once again raises the question of the preparation for local government elections in time for this year,” Ramotar added.
He said that the PPP have discussed the problems that are being encountered in the registration process.
The situation of birth certificates is persistent and the issues relating to names of persons are also not yet resolved, he said.
Ramotar added that all efforts should be made to remove the various ‘bottlenecks’ to ensure a successful completion of the registration exercise.
The exercise is scheduled to be completed in 190 days and as of May 11 last, 126 have passed.
Ramotar added that GECOM is behind its schedule.
Several registration centres, he noted, have lower achievement rates than expected.
While the rates of submission of completed works in the field have increased significantly, there are some centres that still have unacceptable submission rates.
These centres include those on the East Coast Demerara and Lethem.
