Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday released Kirk Campbell, a mason, on $75,000 bail when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, on an abduction charge.
It is alleged that between January 23 and January 24, 2006, Campbell abducted a girl who was under the age of consent with intent to have carnal knowledge of her. The charge was indictable and the accused was not required to plea.
Campbell is being represented by defence lawyer Hewley Griffith, who, in making a bail application, told the court that initially his client was charged with having carnal knowledge of the same female. He said that it was only yesterday during a hearing in court, that the charge was withdrawn.
Griffith told the court that his client, over the past two years, has been present at all of his court hearing and if granted bail he would pose no flight risk.
According to the defence counsel, Campbell is also gainfully employed at John Fernandes Ltd.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith confirmed the defence arguments. She said that it was while the preliminary inquiry was being conducted in another court they were advised by the Director of Public Prosecutions to institute the present charge.
Also in court yesterday was the mother of the child who was asked by the magistrate if she had anything to say.
She replied, “I want me daughter to get justice because this thing happen when she was only 12 and now she is 13 years old.”
Campbell is expected to make his next court appearance on May 29.
