Withholding of scrutineers’ money will tarnish voters’ list – Corbin

If President Bharrat Jagdeo’s threat to withhold monies from the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) for the purpose of scrutineering until the ongoing house-to-house registration is realised then the PNCR will deem the ensuing list ‘not-credible.’

This comment came from Leader of the major opposition party Robert Corbin during a press briefing yesterday.

President Jagdeo, on Saturday last, said that the Ministry of Finance has instructed the Guyana Elections Commissions (GECOM) not to pay out any more money until a detailed report from the PNCR is provided on the period in question.

“Clearly the money has been misappropriated and misused. They have not accounted for a single cent as yet and from what I (have) gathered there are some scrutineers that have fictitious names receiving payment. I have gathered, also, that some of the scrutineers are not receiving the full amount of money…,” the President emphasized during a press conference at State House on Saturday.

The allegations against the PNCR first surfaced during a press conference by Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon. He had indicated that information was been provided that the main opposition party received $100M from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to pay opposition party scrutineers and that the party has not accounted for the money over the past four months.
Corbin subsequently denounced the assertion as deliberate and malicious misinformation.
“The PNCR has accounted for all sums of money received in the aforesaid manner, with the exception of some sections of Region Eight and Upper Mazaruni in Region Seven…The sum involved is less than $1 M (one million)…The Deputy Chief Scrutineer for these areas has signed acknowledging receipt of the bulk sum and individual receipts are being awaited because of the difficulty in accessing these areas on account of the terrain…As soon as these individual receipts are returned they will be submitted to GECOM.
Yesterday he reiterated that for Jagdeo to say that the money was being used to fund protests “was a dis-acknowledgement of the crisis in Guyana.”
