Most of the country’s leading junior players are competing in the 2008 Woodpecker Products- sponsored National Junior Squash Championships which served off on Tuesday evening at the Georgetown Club Courts.
Heading the list is defending Under-19 champion Kristian Jeffrey, who will be participating in his final tournament at this level and is the overwhelming favorite to win the category, while all four of Guyana’s current Caribbean individual champions Abhishek Singh, Ashley Khalil, Victoria and Alexander Arjoon are also expected to be on show.
It is anticipated that they should receive stiff opposition from the likes of Jason Ray Khalil, Oliver Kear, Mary Fung-A-Fat and the Jeffrey twins Keisha and Kayla.
Missing out on this year’s competition are Deje Dias and Daina King due to academic commitments and injury respectively.
According to a release from the Organisers, a number of exciting newcomers will be seen in the Under-11 category and action is expected to continue every night with the finals scheduled for Sunday.
The release further stated that this will be the last opportunity for players to impress the selectors before they meet to select a team of 14 players to represent Guyana, at the upcoming Caribbean championships in Bermuda in July.
