Over 42 riders have already confirmed that they will be in Corentyne Berbice under starter’s orders for the start of the 26th annual National Sports Commission’s 3-stage cycle road race which will commemorate the 42nd Independence Anniversary of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
And fans can look forward to a very classical and grueling race that will test the mettle of all the riders and teams competing.
Headlining the list of overseas based riders is 6-time champion Dwayne ‘Road Hog’ Gibbs who is a member of the Vellos Cycle Club of St. Maarten. He will is joined by club mates Albert Philander and Gordon Kennedy and probably one or two other riders, according to Philander.
Godfrey Pollydore, himself a former champion and one of the top riders this country has ever produced will be at the helm of his team, The Link Cycling Club of Anguilla. Timothy Richards will also be a part of this team.
Pollydore, speaking with Kaieteur Sport said he is not 100% fit due to a lower back problem which has constantly bothered him but he is promising to do his best.
Antiguan based Glen Campbell will also be in the fray for top honours as will another Anguilla based rider Andrew Reece who has also been a proud winner of this event before.
A number of other overseas based riders including the Barbados contingent were expected to arrive last evening.
And not to be counted out will be the team from the Ancient County of Berbice. Leading their charge is junior champion Neil Reece, who is just back from the West Indies versus the World Championships hosted in Trinidad and Tobago.
The A. Ally and Sons sponsored rider will be hoping that along with his teammates, Gary Benjamin, Sherwin Giddings, Kester David and Trevis Cipriani they can make a strong mark on this year’s event.
The organisers certainly could not have asked for a better flavored race and spectators and cycling lovers will not have an easy task to choose who will win.
Riders and officials will leave the city tomorrow morning for Berbice with the first stage set to ride off on Saturday morning at 07:30hrs at Corriverton to finish in New Amsterdam.
The riders will just have a couple of hours rest before facing the starter’s orders again on Saturday at 14:30hrs for stage two which pedals off from the Rosignol Ferry Stelling to finishing on Carifesta Avenue.
The third and finals stage is set to start in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden on Sunday morning at 08:00hrs to conclude on Homestretch Avenue in the capital city.
Demerara Distillers Limited will be the official supplier of water for the race.
