Needing all the support it can get, amateur boxing in Guyana got just that when the entity received permission to construct an outdoor ring, at the National Gymnasium.
President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Affeeze Khan, who has been working assiduously to help the association regain its prominence on the local sports agenda, told Kaieteur Sport during a visit to the facility that he is very grateful for the support offered by the National Sports Commission (NSC), especially the Director Neil Kumar.
According to Khan, the setting up of the ring will go a far way in helping to prepare the four boxers identified to participate at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games which is scheduled to be staged in Pune, India from 12-18 October.
Khan added that because of the high activity witnessed at the Gymnasium in the afternoons, it became almost impossible for the boxers to concentrate on what they were doing and coupled with the fact that they were also required to dismantle the ring every day, it became a bit tiresome to do so and they eventually sought permission from the NSC to construct the ring outside.
“For the boxers to attain general ring craft there needs to be a permanent ring setup so that they can do work in the ring,” Khan pointed out.
The ring has a sand based floor and this, the President said would aid in strengthening their legs thereby increasing their speed and mobility, crucial assets in the sport.
He stated that the facility is open for use to all interested boxers from gyms affiliated with GABA.
Meanwhile, the six boxers identified are Akeem Alexander, Clevon Rock, Randall Douglas, Moonchan Sankar, Stefan Gouveia and Orlando Allicock and of those four will be selected to represent Guyana at the event.
The Guyana Olympic Association has already provided the tickets for the boxers, while coaches Carl Franklin and Terrence Poole have been earmarked to travel with the team.
The team trains everyday except Sunday with Monday, Wednesday and Friday set aside for general conditioning and road work at the National Park, while Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, they attend weight training under the guidance of Khan.
