When the Berbice leg of this years Neal and Massy national inter club 40-over cricket competition got underway over the weekend in the Ancient County, rain played a major part in proceedings with two of the games fixed for Saturday being rained out.
The games affected were Skeldon against Scotsburg at the Skeldon ground and the fixture between Blairmont Community Centre and Bermine slated for the Blairmont ground.
However two matches were played on Saturday while one second round game was held on Sunday. In the matches played; at the Area H ground in Rose Hall Town the game was reduced to 25 overs a side due to the inclement weather. Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar (RHTWSB) trashed Kildonan by 64 runs.
The host won the toss and decided to take first use of the pitch and blasted 140-6 in their allotment of overs with the inform former West Indies U-19 captain Andre Percival leading the way with a quick fire 30, he received support from Delbert Hicks, Khemraj Mahadeo and Michael Rengasammy who scored 26 apiece.
Bowling for Kildonan, pacer Hemraj Mankarran and off spinner Rajendra Ramcharitar picked up two wickets each.
In their turn at the wicket, the visitors ended on 76-9 with Mankarran returning to be 28 not out. Bowling for the host, left arm spinner Ravi Narine had pristine figures of 5-5 off five overs, he received admirable support from leg spinner Abdel Fudadin 2-12 and pacer Renrick Batson 2-21.
In the game played at the Bush Lot ground on the West Coast of Berbice, West Berbice beat Police by 5 wickets.
In the game which was reduced to 32 overs due to the inclement weather, West Berbice won the toss and put the lawmen into bat. The cops never got their radar right and ended on 136-8 with the Moakhan brothers Zaheer and Imran making 25 and 21 respectively, while Terrence De Cunha scored 20. Bowling for the host, off spinners Krisendat Ramoo 3-13 and Kenje Sedoc 2-14 were on target.
West Berbice in reply arrived at 137-5 from 28 overs with Sedoc leading the way with an accomplish 43, Carlston Nurse 34 and Ramoo 21 not out, with Sedoc and nurse putting together 53 from 9 overs for the third wicket. Bowling for the cops, off spinner Imran Moakhan opening the bowling, ended with 3-28.
In the lone second round game that was played on Sunday at the Scotsburg ground, a magnificent all round performance from Scottsburg’s Michael Kendall was too much for Kildonan as they were trashed by 93 runs.
Scores in that game were: Kildonan won the toss and strangely sent Scotsburg into bat, the host made full use of the generosity and blazed to a commanding 251-5 from 40 overs.
Peter Grimes led the assault with a swashbuckling 85 (8×4, 3×6) he was well supported by Kendall 52 (3×4, 1×6) as the two plundered 153 for the 4th wicket in just 23 overs. Clarence Bradford chipped in with 27 as he and Berbice U-19 batsman Alex Amsterdam, 21, had earlier put together 66 in 13 overs for the 2nd wicket.
Bowling for the visitors medium pacer Bisham Singh 3 and of spinner Hemraj Mankarran 2, took the wickets.
They in reply were befuddled by the off spin of Kendall who had immaculate figures 4 for 1 including a hat-trick as they were dismissed for 158. Kendall heroics reduced the hapless visitors from 147-6 to 147-9; he was supported by medium pacer Hakeem Bowling with 2-32. Somesh Mangru 47, Andrew Persaud 30 and Mankarran 20 contributed with the bat for the visitors. (Samuel Whyte)
