Starting time is 9:00 am sharp each day at the Keishar’s Sports Club on Camp and Hadfield Street, Georgetown. A time limit of three hours will be granted for each game. The tournament will be played in two categories, Senior and Junior. All players are asked to walk with their chess board, clock and pen to record their moves.
The tournament is sponsored exclusively by Demerara Distillers Limited under the Topco Brand. More details on the event can be accessed from Mr. Irshad Mohamed on telephone 664-1650.
Meanwhile, the Oasis Chess Club will be holding a movie night tomorrow at the Oasis Café on Carmichael Street, Georgetown.
The name of the movie is “Searching for Bobby Fischer” staring- Josh Waitzkin (Max Pomeranc) is just a typical American boy interested in baseball when one day he challenges his father at chess and wins.
Showing unusual precocity at the outdoor matches at Washington Square in New York City, he quickly makes friends with a hustler named Vinnie (Laurence Fishburne) who teaches him speed chess. Josh’s parents hire a renowned chess coach, Bruce (Ben Kingsley), who teaches Josh the usefulness of measured planning.
Along the way Josh becomes tired of Bruce’s system and chess in general and purposely throws a match, leaving the prospects of winning a national championship in serious jeopardy.
There will be two short lectures prior to the movie, one by Mr. Errol Tiwari on Bobby Fischer and Mr Alberto Dyer on how life imitates Chess.
Starting time is 1800 hrs. Admission is free. The movie sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Walker of the Oasis Café. Contact can be made with Irshad Mohamed on 664-1650 for more information.
