Skipper Royan Fredericks followed up his 88 in the last trial match with a confident 63 on the rain affected opening day of the third and final three-day Guyana under-19 cricket trial at the Police ground yesterday.
After the entire first session was washed out due to heavy overnight rain in Georgetown Fredericks helped his side to 168-6 off 64 overs against Jonathan Foo’s X1 by the time bad light stopped play.
The left-handed former Guyana under-15 player struck seven fours and two sixes from 80 balls and 130 minutes of batting before he was fifth out at 101; well taken at deep mid-off by Guyana under-19 left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun, attempting to go over the top to impressive Guyana under-17 off-spinner Sahadeo Somai.
National under-19 pacer Leon Scott bowled Rajendra Naikbarran (0) with the day’s fifth ball before Fredericks dominated an 81-run second wicket stand with National under-17 opener Ryan Rajmangal, who labored for 89 balls and 96 minutes for his ultra cautious 19.
Somai, who flighted the ball nicely and extracted spin from another placid track, had Rajmangal caught at point at 90-3 before removing Balinder Shivpersaud (1) to an impetuous swipe to deep mid-wicket eight runs later.
Manoj Pooranauth was run out for six as Fredericks’ X1 slipped to 99-4 in sunny conditions before Somai, who finished the truncated day with 3-35 from 14 overs, got rid of the Captain after he was put down by wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble on 58 off Bishun.
Guyana under-19 middle order batsman Seon Hetmyer looked the most accomplished of the batsmen against the spin and along with Royston Alkins, who looked very unsure to the flighted deliveries, added 57 for the sixth wicket before Hetmyer, dropped on 29 by Bishun off his own bowling, lost concentration and edged a catch to the keeper off the leg-spin of Foo to leave the score on 156-6 on the stroke of Tea.
Hetymer’s 29 lasted 85 balls, 71 minutes and included two boundaries on the heavy outfield.
Alkins, let off by Bramble off Foo on 20, finished the day on 32 from 87 balls with two fours and two sixes while Alex Amsterdam (2) was the other not out batsman.
Play on the second day today is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs.
