The battle for places in the final four of the Digicel/Carib Sweet 16 knockout football championship is set to unfold tonight at the Plaisance Community Centre ground following the final group of 16 matches on Tuesday night.
Seeking to get to the money round first, will be Victoria Kings who face the resurgent Western Tigers with one team expected to be badly wounded at the end of the match-up.
The Tigers are coming off the biggest upset of the competition so far, having consumed Alpha United 4-2 in an epic overtime battle.
The Kings themselves are still basking in their equally epic 2-1 triumph over another power side, Pele, in the first game of the tournament.
The feature showdown this evening promises another mouth watering showdown which brings together Sunburst Camptown against top East Demerara side, BV/Triumph United.
The BV side is known to upset a number of city teams dating back to the Namilco Cup, but Camptown will be aiming to ensure that that is not the case tonight.
The respective winners of this evening’s matches will ease into the semis set for next Thursday.
Meanwhile, in the final group of 16 matches, the Guyana Defence Force arrested Fruta Conquerors 4-1 with Dwight Peters firing in a hat-trick. Home team Plaisance, enjoying excellent crowd support from the children and even a few senior folks, hammered the lethargic Mahaica side, by a 3-1 margin.
Peters was on fire for the Army and started hitting the target after Fruta took the lead in style through a Devon Forde goal in the 19th minute.
It took the GDF 20 minutes before they could have responded but once they did, it was all over for the Conquerors who became the conquered.
Peters netted in the 39th, 56th and 90th minute, his momentum being broken by strike partner Stellon 5 minutes before game time.
The performance of the Army perhaps served as timely inspiration for home team Plaisance as they emulated the GDF’s performance backed up by their large band of supporters who cheered them all the way.
The players hitting the network were Maurice Young (43), Kester Green (67) and Captain Kerwin Bacchus in the 78th.
Mahaica’s consolation effort came off the boot of Dellon Charles in the 83rd minute.
The final two quarter-final matches will be played on Saturday evening. Ann’s Grove will find the going tough against the GDF and will have to pull out all the stops in order to survive.
The semi-final dye will be cast when Plaisance lock horns with Bakewell Buxton Stars in what pundits are predicting will be a fierce showdown.
