A team of local fishermen is preparing to go out at sea in search of missing fishermen Mahadeo Ramdeo, Ramnarine Jagmohan and Jason Marshall after a boat fitting the description of one in which they left was reportedly spotted recently.
Kaieteur News was told that a group of local fishermen spotted the vessel, ‘Palpos III’, in Suriname with what appear to be human bodies inside.
However, there has been no confirmation of this fact, since the men claimed that there were too scared to go close to the boat.
According to information reaching Kaieteur News, the men said that they were scared to go public with the information, since they have to be traversing that area to ply their trade.
This newspaper was told that a report of the incident was made to the Surinamese authority, but it is unclear whether any attempts were made to search the area.
The three men disappeared some time after February 9 last aboard fishing vessel ‘Palpos III’, during a routine fishing trip in the Atlantic Ocean.
A $1M reward has since been initiated by Prettipual Singh Investment, the owner of the boat, for anyone who has information that would lead to the recovery of the boat and crew.
The Ministry of Agriculture, through its Fisheries Department, was seeking financial maintenance for the families until the men are found or there is some closure to the matter.
However, PSI has since written to the Ministry advising that they have no legal obligation to take care of the families of the missing men.
When Kaieteur News spoke with the mother of Ramdeo yesterday, she said that she has since gotten a work as a security guard, since her husband has been left handicapped as a result of an accident.
“I have to work. I don’t have anyone else to look after me, and the company didn’t give me any money. It is hard, but I have to do something,” the woman said.
She said that she is still hopeful that her son is still alive.
Meanwhile, Jagmohan’s mother, Latchmin Jagmohan, said that she, too, is praying that her son is still alive.
Jagmohan’s birthday was on Sunday, and his mother did a religious service for him.
Ramdeo, 24, resided at 190 Coldingen Housing Scheme, while 46-year-old Jagmohan, a father of two, resided at 356 Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara; and Marshall, called Baraka, 24, lives at 11 Hogg Street, Albouystown.
Both sea and air searches were conducted for the men, but these were in vain.
The men left aboard the vessel from the PSI Wharf at Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara on January 23, and were scheduled to return on February 13 last.
Contact has since been made with Surinamese and Venezuelan authorities to determine whether the men were seen in those areas.
