No official at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is aware of the case of Samantha Browne losing her baby at that institution; and, as such, no one can give an official response.
Yesterday, when Kaieteur News attempted to speak with officials there, neither the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) nor the matron was aware of the incident.
“The matron says she knows nothing, and neither does the CEO; so none of them will speak with you,” a secretary told this newspaper.
Browne is alleging that her first son died at that institution as a result of negligence.
The 29-year-old mother of one said that, had the nurses taken the advice of the doctor who conducted her ultra sound, her son would have been alive today.
Browne’s son was born dead on May 2 last at GPHC, after being admitted to the institution on April 28 last.
According to the Lot 612 South Amelia’s Ward woman, she was 35 weeks pregnant at the time, and the radiologist who did her ultra sound on April 24 recommended that labour be induced for the baby’s safety.
The results of that ultra sound examination stated that the middle cerebral and umbilical arteries showed abnormal blood flow, indicating a sign of Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR).
This meant that the baby was not growing at the normal rate inside the uterus.
Such types of babies usually have a low weight at birth, an expert said.
Babies who have IUGR are more likely to have certain health problems, including a difficult time handling the stress of vaginal delivery, increased risk of being stillborn, low blood sugar level at birth, and lower resistance to infection.
The most common cause is a problem in the placenta (the tissue that carries oxygen, food and blood to the baby). IUGR is a term for a baby who is smaller than normal during pregnancy.
After being admitted to the maternal ward, Browne alleged, doctors at that institution took at least three days before inducing labour as was recommended.
She said that she had to endure suffering before the doctors finally agreed to induce labour.
Speaking with Kaieteur News yesterday, Browne said that she is still awaiting word from her lawyer as it relates to the lawsuit.
But even as the woman waits on her lawyer, yesterday two other persons visited this newspaper claiming to be treated very ‘unprofessionally’ by nurses at the maternal ward at the institution
