Cyclists are gearing up for this Sunday’s 4th annual Grenville Felix Memorial Cycle road race in the Ancient County which is organised by the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC) of Berbice in association with the Felix Family.
The 60-mile contest is the fourth annual event and is open to riders throughout Guyana. It is held in honour of the late engineer who passed away four years ago at the age of 96. Felix who was one of Guyana’s first and oldest engineer’s at the time of his demise, worked with the Bookers and Guyana Sugar Corporation in Guyana and various parts of the world. This is the sixth cycling event held in his honour.
The first two was held in recognition of his birthday. It was changed to a memorial event after he died. According to Roberts the event this year is expected to be bigger and has attracted more incentives.
On Wednesday, Felix’ overseas based children and other relatives presented the sponsorship coordinator, Roberts.
Speaking at the simple ceremony, Claville Francis said that the family will continue to sponsor the event, since it was something “Uncle Gren” liked apart from his engineering work and other community activities.
Francis also expressed confidence in the work of the FACC and Roberts and the way the event is conducted. Roberts thanked the Felix Family and for the confidence they have shown in the club and assured that the event will be well organised.
The race will begin at 10:00hrs, with a flying start from his former residence at Canefield East Canje, Berbice proceed to his former place of employment at the Rose Hall Estate before turning back. They will then proceed to the #51 Police Station and back to the place of origin.
Prizes will be awarded to the first 10 finishers while the first four juveniles, first three veterans and first three females will also be rewarded. The first two club cyclists will also be recognised.
There will also be 10 sprint prizes at stake. The juveniles will pedal off from Nand Persaud and Company Limited while the females will ride from Tain UG Berbice campus to the finishing line.
