Machines were designed to make life easier and Information Technology is used quite often to find solutions to a number of life’s problems. It is no secret that Guyana’s public sector in particular, has an issue regarding the use of tomes of paper for data storage instead of employing electronic solutions.
Years ago, the University of Guyana began transferring records of former students from log books to the University’s online database. This was one step whereby a public entity was going digital in terms of its record keeping. However, much is still needed in other sectors.
Providing this service currently in Guyana, is Innosys Guyana. The company on Saturday showcased its services at the launch of the new high speed internet service ‘Blaze’ being provided by the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT).
One of the company’s representatives explained that Innosys Guyana is a partner of Oracle, which is an international company providing integrated cloud applications and platform services.
He explained that the company uses Oracle’s databases. He said that the Innosys software runs on the database and it performs functions such as running queries, listing of employees, storing information regarding payrolls, issues payslips and stores information concerning the clock-in and clock-out times for employees.
Further, he said that the software also has document management and medical management components whereby information about a person’s National Insurance Scheme (NIS) medical information can be stored.
The software can also help to manage persons’ businesses, as it can provide notifications to users about whether they need to renew any permits relating to their businesses.
Moreover, it was disclosed by another Innosys employee, that the company is a local software development company that provides a cloud solution or an ‘on premises’ solution.
She said that if customers wish to access the cloud solution, they will be provided with a link to the company’s application.
“That’s all they need. They don’t need any server or any IT employees on site. With the benefit of having the link, they can access it from any location and then they log in just like Facebook, and you start data entry.”
She said that all the forms possessing the fields for data entry are stored online. It was noted that the application can be used to store sensitive information such as NIS and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) data. This therefore requires strict security to protect people’s private information.
It was explained that the security is very detailed and based on the user account of the customer. She said that the access to security changes for the application is directed through the company.
According to the employee, the person that the company or entity recommends to create the account would have specific access to the software tailored by the company. “So as you say the HR (Human Resources) payroll aspect is very sensitive information, people wouldn’t want their salaries to be accessed by other persons. So like Facebook, you have a username and a password to access the system and we have the https server which is secured, it is not an open server that anybody can access like that.”
Further, she said that the company being an Oracle partner is expected to have a secured system for its customers. So far, the company has quite a number of local clients which include Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry, Grand Coastal Hotel, Giftland OfficeMax, GAFOORS, Environmental Protection Agency, Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Metro and eGovernment Agency.
Further, the representative said that presently, the company is developing software for the Georgetown Mayor and City Council to handle its rates and taxes management which will be on the premises.
