A businessman who was charged with wounding his spouse was yesterday placed on $80,000 bail when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Fifty-two-year-old Barton Mackenzie of Lot 465 North East La Penitence pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on July 6 at North East La Penitence, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Andrea Brummell.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves told the court that the defendant (Mackenzie) and the virtual complainant (Brummell) are known to each other for a period of seven months.
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
Prosecutor Gonsalves told the court that the victim is hospitalized at the Woodlands Hospital in a critical condition and is scheduled for surgery.
The court heard that the victim received several puncture wounds to her legs and buttocks.
The defendant’s attorney told the court that his client is the proprietor of a motorcycle shop and has no prior matter in any other court.
The lawyer went on to tell the court that the victim is not aware of what transpired on the day in question, and for that reason bail should be granted to his client.
The lawyer added that his client was hit several times to his left temple with a hammer and he received puncture wounds to both hands.
The magistrate told Mackenzie that the condition for bail is that he must stay away from Brummell until the completion of the trial.
According to reports, Brummell was stabbed and beaten after she asked her spouse to borrow $3000 to visit the doctor.
Mackenzie will make his next court appearance on July 24.
