It was under the watch of the People’s Progressive Party Civic that the word “scam” came to prominence, said Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams.
He was responding to questions about the opposition’s list of scams and scandals allegedly perpetuated by the Coalition Government.
Williams added that the PPP knows that a large portion of his party’s effort to remove them (PPP) from power, was based mainly on acts of corruption. The AG added that in 2010 the then government now the main opposition party, had a number of scams and scandals of their own.
He proceeded to identify the Stone scam, the Milk scam, the Law books scam, the Re-migrant duty free vehicle scam, Cane Grove conservancy dam scam, the IAST scam, the Polar beer scam and the GUYSUCO scam
Williams said that the PPP may believe Guyanese have a short memory. This, he said, is the only reason he feels the PPP would make such a “wild statement”.
“They have their congress coming up, they want to get positions, they are jockeying with each other for positions in their party. So they have come up with a way to show they could deal with the APNU/AFC government, but that’s not the way.” Williams explained.
Williams added that in his view the PPP ill-treated the nation for 23 years, by impoverishing the majority of Guyanese.
“The people know we are a new government; they know we are having problems, but we don’t have scammers within our Cabinet,” the AG said.
Guyana scored 29 points out of 100 on the 2015 Corruption Perceptions Index reported by Transparency International. The country averaged 26.73 Points from 2005 until 2015, reaching an all-time high of 30 Points in 2014 and a record low of 25 Points in 2006.
The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. A country or territory’s score indicates the perceived level of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
