The team of chess players that will be vying for honours at the 42nd chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan, left Guyana early this morning for the European country brimming with confidence at procuring top accolades. The

Guyana delegation consists of 6 males, CM Wendell Muesa, CM Anthony Drayton, Haifeng Su, CM Taffin Khan, CM Ronuel Greenidge and Roberto Neto and 5 females, WCM Maria Varona Thomas, Sherrifa Ali, Julia Clementson, Yolanda Persaud and Jessica Clementson. Muesa will also double as the coach and according to President of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), Irshad Mohamed, he (Muesa) will also benefit from the input of Slovanian Grandmaster, Georg Mohr, who has been assigned to the Guyanese contingent by the ruling body, FIDE to assist them in their techniques.
Meanwhile, Director of Sports, Christopher Jones, met with the executives of the GCF as well as the players and delivered a short pep talk. The DOS further chipped in with a considerable donation on behalf of the National Sports Commission and handed over a cheque to Mr. Mohamed. The simple ceremony took place last Friday afternoon at Club 704, Lamaha and Albert Streets.
Mr. Jones wished the players well and urged them to play hard to accrue top accolades. He further commended the officials of the GCF for diligently applying themselves in their efforts to raise the requisite funds to facilitate the trip.
Attorney-at-law, James Bond, was also present at the function and added his bit with a cheque of an undisclosed sum. Also a versatile player, Mr. Bond said that he was happy to support the players. He said that he is aware of the challenges they experience and was only too willing to support them. “We have a bunch of players that has the potential to do well but they need the kind of support to address their itinerary so I am delighted to be of assistance to them,” said Mr. Bond as he handed over his contribution.
Mr. Mohamed was pleased with the donations and expressed his sentiments to his benefactors. “Sponsorship has always been the oxygen of our advancement in the sport and I’d like to express profound gratitude to all those individuals as well as members of the corporate community that has supported our efforts,” he said.
Those businesses and individuals coming in for praise are Somwaru Travel Service, Kings Jewelry World, Dr Sen Gupta and Associates, Hardware Depot, Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and William Walker of Oasis Café.
