Police have detained a suspect in connection with the murder of 53-year-old Terry Lakhan, whose nude body was found around 23.30 hrs on Thursday in his Back Street, Herstelling, East Bank Demerara home.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said that detectives have recovered a computer and other items that were taken from the slain man’s home. A relative of Lakhan’s said that the detained man is a villager.
At press time, there were reports that police were questioning three more individuals.
Lakhan, a Manager at Gafoor’s, was found hanging by a cord in his wardrobe, but police have since ascertained that he was manually strangled.
Kaieteur News understands that a few packets containing tablets were in one of his hands and family photographs were strewn near the corpse. There was reportedly no sign of forced entry.
A relative said that Lakhan, who has a son, recently lost his keys and was to have his locks changed.
A woman who lives in the flat below said that she was relaxing at home when she heard strange noises coming from Lakhan’s apartment around 23.30 hrs. She then heard someone opening the gate and on looking outside, saw a strange man, who was carrying a bag, hurriedly leaving the yard.
She immediately became suspicious and on checking Lakhan’s apartment, observed that all the lights were off. She subsequently tried the front door and found it open. Upon checking the apartment, she noticed that several items were missing.
She eventually found Lakhan’s nude body in his wardrobe.
One relative told Kaieteur News that she got a phone call from a neighbour and she immediately left her West Ruimveldt home and rushed to the scene. Upon arriving, she was informed of the discovery.
Other relatives surmised that the stranger who was seen leaving the yard was known to the victim. Neighbours said that Lakhan was seen at a Chinese restaurant imbibing earlier in the night.
