—Local businesses to benefit from advanced IT solutions
With a keen focus on promoting cutting edge technology designed to advance and make more efficient the way business is done, Starr Computer yesterday officially launched its Business Centre.
The Business Centre is situated on the second floor of the Brickdam, Georgetown headquarters of the company.
Yesterday representatives of various businesses were expected to have a first-hand glimpse of what the Business Centre has to offer. A number of established businesses including banks and others that have Point of Sale (POS) operations were slated to take advantage of the experience yesterday afternoon.
Starr Computer has a reputation of offering consultation, recommendations and proposals regarding technological solutions at no cost to businesses.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday morning Mr. Mike Mohan, President of Starr Computer, disclosed that while the focus is on technology to enhance the operation of businesses, some of the very solutions showcased can also be easily incorporated in the home. He demonstrated the use of a door buzzer which, he noted, can provide real time video, to multiple mobile phones, of the person who rang the buzzer. A photograph can also be taken of the person at that point too.
Also demonstrated yesterday was yet another technological solution to ensure that
security guards are efficient and do not short-change their employers by sleeping on the job during their shifts, as is often seen in this part of the world.
Members of the media were also privy to information about a number of other advanced technologies including: Touch Screen POS Solutions, Portable printers, Portable POS equipment, Biometric systems, among others.
“Things are going mobile now; everything is going mobile. When you walk into the stores now or go into a restaurant…the waiter (or waitress) should be able to take your order and at the same time be able to have a receipt printed in the kitchen,” Mohan explained as he underscored that such technological solutions can help to improve efficiency of a business operation since they can serve to process orders swiftly.
But Starr is not only catering to those who are financially established. In fact, Mohan disclosed that the company is prepared to offer a suitable package to persons desirous of adding available advanced technology to even small scale business operation. He explained that “we have a package that we are trying to put together…we can link them up with one of our banking partners, and they negotiate for the bank to buy the items they want and then they can pay in instalments.”
“If you have an account with the bank, usually it is much easier but most importantly when you are working with Starr, the bank tends to be more lenient, because they know you are kind of ambitious by trying to do something to move forward. So generally it is much easier to get a loan,” Mohan noted.
The Business Centre was created with the intent of providing start-up businesses, small-medium and corporate, with Information Technology (IT) solutions in the area of mobility, POS, security, training and cloud computing. Cloud computing is a kind of Internet-based computing that provides shared processing resources and data to computers and other devices on demand.
Starr Computer has been deemed the leading and most experienced POS Hardware provider in Guyana. However, Mohan noted that his company is now on a mission to move beyond the traditional POS systems so as to engage its customers in the future of IT in business.
Mohan is convinced that companies in Guyana are not realising their true potential because they are utilising traditional methods of operations.
“Starr Computer is not only a reseller of IT Solutions but also a company that fully utilises the technology it resells. Utilisation of such technology allows Starr to better equip its customers’ operations,” Mohan added.
But being able to procure the necessary technology is only one aspect required to improve a business operation. According to Starr Computer’s General Manager, Mr. Rehman Majeed, in order to stay in business, persons also have to be able to effectively manage their business as well. “You have to manage your records, your reports, ordering goods…and these are the things that we are actually showcasing in the new business centre,” Majeed emphasised.
According to the General Manager, not only are many companies looking for reliability with their hardware purchases and are therefore seeking reputable brands from Starr, but he claimed that he has also seen a heightened demand by local companies for advice to enhance their current POS systems so as to be more productive and to respond better to their customers’ needs.
The aim of the Business Centre, he stressed, is to ultimately improve productivity and by extension, customer service.
Currently displayed in the Business Centre are the products and solutions of Starr Computer’s international partners such as Lenovo, Star Micronics, Zebra, Bematech, Qsee, HP, FirstAlert, Linksys, Logitech, Kingston and DataCard.
The General Manager yesterday made it clear, “we live in a very competitive world and if we do business the way we did it 20 years ago we would be out of business very shortly.”
While traditionally Starr Computer focused mainly on hardware solutions, Majeed yesterday revealed that the company is also looking to offer ‘in a big way’ software solutions. In fact the company is expected to launch software solutions in a matter of weeks.
“Cloud is the next big thing…we will be doing cloud and some local software solutions for our clients,” Majeed added.
