The outstanding work of three members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was recognized yesterday, when the Professional Guard Service (PGS) hosted an award ceremony at its Jamoon Drive, Meadow Brook, Georgetown
location.
Detective Devon Lowe; Corporal Linden Zammett and Constable Rayon Godette, were the three officer presented with monetary awards. The officers along with 45 ranks from PGS were presented with awards which included certificates and trophies for their exemplary services.
Mr. Wasim Khan told the gathering that PGS had received more than outstanding works from its various ranks. He said that some of them had gone beyond the call of duty.
Khan made special mention of the three lawmen, whom he said have been working along with the guard service to catch the “bad guys”. “We would like to thank the officers for maintaining law and order and keeping Guyanese safe”, Khan noted.
Chief Security Officer, Mr. Paul DeFreitas explained that the Professional Guard Service is a para military organization that strives on the motto “Excuse cannot be accepted instead of results”. He also took the opportunity to thank PGS clients and their representatives. “We cannot survive without them” he pointed out.
Yesterday also saw the launch of the service’s Occupational Health and Safety committee. The committee was selected by members of the guard service who voted at a recent election.
An official from PGS, Mrs. Melanie Mc Turk said that the voter’s turnout was very overwhelming and it is an endorsement of people’s appreciation for the significance of Occupational Health and Safety.
“Now…we are in the business of security. I would like to say that safe communities and safe businesses create a safe economic climate.”
She added that in an effort to create safe economic climates, PGS is focused on promoting national development. However, she explained that very often the link between security and the welfare and health of the individuals delivering security services is taken for granted.
Mc Turk continued, “PGS has a long position of looking out for and picking up for their ranks…and I think our former Chief Executive Officer (the late) Dougal Kirkpatrick was famous for his open door policy… where ranks can walk right in and bring problems, issues and challenges directly to him.”
She added that she hopes that the same policy is kept with the introduction of occupational health and safety.
Mc Turk stated that she was very heartened at the Minister of Labour’s decision to revisit the private security Act. According to her, it is very important in light of the fact that women make up over sixty percent of the security sector. “And it is very important that we keep that in mind as we advocate legislation for this sector”.
Shifting her attention to pregnant women in the line of duty, Mc Turk stressed that this sector is very dangerous and it is inappropriate for pregnant women to serve the full term and not be allowed to go on leave earlier.
The award ceremony aimed at recognizing the exemplary services of various ranks of employees for the fourth quarter of last year and the first quarter of this year. Deep appreciations were extended to the employees for their dedication. They were also encouraged to continue with their great works as protectors of the nation.
