Singing sensation Terry Gajraj, through the “SAVE ABEE” foundation, is assisting with the development of a playground and other facilities at the Shaheed Girls Orphanages, Oleander Gardens, East Coast Demerara.
SAVE ABEE, is a non-profit organization registered in the United States of America. It is in the process of obtaining a non-profit status in Guyana and Canada.
Gajraj said that in order to fulfill and continue the dream, the NGO needs everyone to come together and contribute to children’s development.
He explained that a playground with floodlights and developed structure will be constructed at the girls’ orphanage to assist with their extracurricular activities.
Gajraj said that the foundation is set-up based on the principle of giving the children of Guyana the skills required to operate in society. SAVE ABEE, is primarily focusing its efforts on the rural regions of Guyana, where the lack of transportation and computers poses a burden on the people.
To spread the word, SAVE ABEE will go to four villages in each county, (Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo) and prepare a meal for the underprivileged. At this gathering, attempts to establish relationships with business associates will be made to see if someone can help provide a home or land, with which the foundation can extend its project to that village.
“We would like to give back to each village, as our donors will be from many parts of Guyana, and as a means of providing accessible educational resources to the children despite geographical location.”
He said, “As the children continue to excel in computer courses, our foundation will grant a scholarship, (or scholarships, based on the availability of funds) to the children so that they can further their academic studies.”
According to secretary of the Board, Hakeem Khan, the completion of the playground is being funded by the SAVE ABEE foundation. The entire concept started several years ago but funding was prioritized based on the needs of the children.
“Over the past two years the board made two important decisions that were costly. Firstly, we brought in our own bus for the children. Then, because we weren’t satisfied with the quality of education in the public school system we enrolled the girls into private schools which developed their academic standards,” he explained.
Adding that the playground will have day and night capability, Khan said Guyana Goldfields is supplying play equipment.
