Jorcell Troyer was crowned St Stanislaus College Chess Champion when the Royal Chess Academy (GCA), in conjunction with the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), staged the Saints Chess Competition at the school’s Brickdam location last Saturday afternoon.
The three days tournament commenced Saturday March 4, continued last Friday afternoon, with the finals on Saturday. Troyer amassed 6 ½ points, while Ghansham Alijohn finished in second place with 5 points. Joshua Gopaul also scored 5 points but was relegated to the 3rd place after the tie break system was employed.
Jaden Taylor did not place among the podium players but he managed to score 3 points. He was consequently awarded for being the youngest player in the tournament while Felicity Sonaram was adjudged the strongest female player after she had amassed 4 ½ points. The other female, Jessica Callender scored 3 points.
The other points standing reads, John Wong, Kristoff Persaud (4 points each), Jessica Callendar, Leroy Greer (3 points each), Aden Johnson and Rayscon Johnson (2 ½ points each).
Samuel James (2 points). Two of the participants, John Adams and Robert Williams failed to register a point. The outstanding players were presented with their prizes upon the conclusion of the tournament.
Meanwhile, National Senior (Men’s) champion and FIDE Instructor, Wendell Meusa, was instrumental in the efficient staging of the tournament. He said that he would not have been able to do so devoid of the input of members of the corporate community.
He is very grateful to those individuals including Chancellor Gentle Ellias and Politician, James Bond. Mr. Meusa also extended gratitude to Ron Mootilall and President of the GCF, Irshad Mohammed for their input in making the function a success.
