– Garbage trucks re-directed to Lusignan dumpsite
A large landfill fire is blazing through the Haags Bosch site at Eccles, East Bank Demerara. The cause is a spontaneous combustion on Sunday afternoon, which caused several sections of the site to shut down and garbage trucks to be re-directed to the Lusignan dumpsite, East Coast Demerara.
Site Manager, Lloyd Stanton, said that the fire started around 15:30 hours on Sunday. He said that an employee was leaving the premises when he noticed smoke emitting from a section of the garbage dump and quickly alerted others.
Employees, he said, began to out the flames but the fire blazed through like a welding torch and spread.
The fire is believed to have started underground and is expected to continue to burn for several more days, unless they manage to subdue it. “We are hoping that it doesn’t go out of control,” Stanton told Kaieteur News yesterday afternoon, as fire fighters continue to struggle to control the flames.
A source said that there is a high chance that mismanagement of waste could have been the cause for the fire. Stanton rebuffed this assertion, stating that the waste was usually properly compacted.
He said the garbage and the wind were fuelling the flames but once the blaze is subdued, they would have excavators search underneath the piles for the source of the fire. “Once we locate the area where it started we will deal with it but for now, we are looking at subduing it,” he said.
Garbage trucks were re-directed to the Lusignan landfill site until the situation is resolved. “Hopefully if all goes well we can start accepting garbage by tomorrow morning. But first we have to ensure that it is safe for our machines to go back on the pile to compact the garbage.”
The Ministry of Communities, when contacted yesterday, stated that it was awaiting a statement from the Guyana Fire Service regarding the issue before they can make any pronouncements.
