Police yesterday signaled their intention to increase patrols in the vicinity of the Giftland Mall, in the wake of two attacks by gunmen on minibuses in this area.
Yesterday, a police official announced that the presence of both plainclothes and uniformed police has increased around Turkeyen and Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara (ECD) to ensure that citizens carry out their activities in a safe and secure environment.
Most importantly, this newspaper was informed that the move was made by police officials to facilitate late night shoppers at the mall.
This comes two days after ranks at the Sparendaam Police Station received reports of armed men, posing as passengers, and robbing at least two minibus drivers and the passengers.
In one instance, one of the drivers was shot and is battling for life at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)
On Monday, one man allegedly flagged down a minibus. When it stopped, two other individuals with guns appeared, and robbed all the occupants of the vehicle after which the trio escaped. That matter was reported to the police by one of the passengers.
And, at around 22:00 hrs on Tuesday, a bus driver, Jermaine Burrowes, was shot during a botched robbery, shortly after he had picked up passengers at the Giftland Mall at Liliendaal.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver was shot in the back. The bullet exited his right side. As a result of the shooting, Burrowes, a father of one, lost one of his kidneys and is battling for his life in the Intensive Care Unit at GPHC.
According to information, when the 28-year-old man drove off after picking off passengers at the Mall, a man stopped him in the vicinity of the “Steel Bridge.” Just as he stopped, another individual on the opposite side of the road, started walking towards the driver.
One of Burrowes’ passengers suspected that the two men were robbers and pulled the door shut, preventing one of the men from entering the bus.
At that point, the bandit, who was approaching the bus from the opposite side of the road, pointed a gun at Burrowes and shot him.
This newspaper understands that with passengers screaming and telling Burrowes to drive, the wounded man continued in the direction of Georgetown, before losing control of his vehicle and ending up in a trench.
The father of one was taken to the hospital by passengers where he continues to battle for life.
At nights, the area where persons would usually wait on transportation (on the embankment) is usually dark and desolate.
