Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company is in negotiations with the government for the liberalization of the sector. Once permission is granted by next year Guyana will have 3G and 4G services for faster internet browsing etc.
Though not in his company’s total control GTT Chief Executive Officer, Justin Nedd, made this disclosure yesterday. He said that his company is doing its best to push the subjects of spectrum and Liberalization along.
He expressed optimism that 2016 will be a year for spectrum expansion even as the telecommunications giant works to be known for keeping its promises, for being easy to do business with and for increasing its speed at job execution.
“I know that this Government is very keen on liberalizing the sector and granting spectrum so that we can free the customers from a slow 2G experience.”
Nedd confirmed that his team is already making preparation for the very important issues by talking to vendors, trying to get the best prices, and looking at the procurement process to see how quickly the company can get the necessary gear installed and tested so that customers can get the 3G and 4G services etc.
“Everything we do is around the customers so 3G and 4G {will allow for} much better life for the customers.” He also noted that once the company procures the equipment and is allowed spectrum, testing will begin because getting that would depend on the spectrum allowed from the authorities.
He said the all the company needs to get next generation services is spectrum. The Government of Guyana through the frequency management unit, is vested with the authority to use the spectrum.
He said once the authorities give us spectrum all that would be needed is three months to buy and install some equipment, “Customers would get 3 and 4G service.”
