“The protection of children must begin in the home,” says President David Granger on the occasion of Child Protection Week.
The President said that children should be nurtured in an environment characterized by love, understanding, kindness, compassion and respect for their dignity.
He added that every child deserves this since every child is worthy of being raised in a happy and secure home, free form fear and free from abuse.
Granger’s comments come as Child Protection Week winds down. Granger said that families have a special responsibility to provide a safe, caring and loving environment for children.
The President said that parents and guardians alike have a duty to ensure that children are not subjected to abuse be it verbal, emotional or physical.
Granger noted that an abused child will carry the scars of that abuse for a lifetime. Experience has shown that children who are abused often end up abusing their own children. “Abuse leads to a vicious cycle. This cycle of abuse must be broken.”
The President declared, “Homes must be sanctuaries of happiness.” He said that in that way, children would look forward to being at home.
Granger said that in addition to happiness, children must get a sense of security in their homes.
“They (children) must respect their parents, not just out of duty, but because they experience the love that parents have for them…They would reciprocate that love.
I would like to encourage all of Guyana to be mindful of our special obligation towards the protection of our children, in this important week, Child Protection Week. The
Future of Guyana belongs to them. This future should be free of violence and other forms of abuse,” said Granger.
