The riverain communities of Orealla and Siparuta, situated along the Corentyne River, will benefit from the services of a new boat which was bought and converted to a River Ambulance at a cost of $4.17M. The vessel was handed over to the Toshao of the Orealla Community David Henry.
The activity was part of the capital project of the Regional Administration of Region Six.
The simple handing over ceremony was held in the compound of the Regional Democratic Council. Chairman David Armogan stated that the boat will be fitted with all the amenities of an ambulance, including stretcher, oxygen tanks, face mask etc.
He stated that the boat will be stationed at Orealla and will be used to ferry patients from the riverain communities of Orealla, and neighbouring Siparuta, which is a further five miles upriver to Skeldon. From Skeldon they will be further transported by ambulance to a hospital on the coast. The River Ambulance will have a doctor and nurse aboard.
Mr. Henry in accepting the gift expressed his gratitude to the Regional Administration and the Government. He gave his assurance that the river ambulance would be used only for the purpose that it is intended.
