The highly anticipated 2015 results of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) are slated to be officially released by the Ministry of Education tomorrow (August 13, 2015).
This is according to an advisory issued by the Ministry of Education yesterday.
Currently candidates can access their CAPE results on the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC)’s website at http://ors.cxc.org/studentportal. However, CSEC candidates will not be able to similarly access their CSEC results until tomorrow (August 13, 2015) from 22:00 hours or (10pm) at http://ors.cxc.org/studentportal.
At a press conference set for the National Centre for Education Resource Development (NCERD), the results will be announced, according to the Ministry.
And the two top performers of the respective examinations will be eligible for scholarships, compliments of Government. This announcement was made in June by Minister of State, Joseph Harmon. This means that four students (two at CAPE and two at CSEC) will be able to study at a University of their choice.
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government, in 2012, announced that the two top performers, each of CSEC and CAPE would have been eligible for scholarships to attend universities of their choice. Last year the government reneged on its commitment to grant scholarships to the candidates’ chosen Universities.
Harmon said that there is a cost factor attached to the awarding of the scholarships. He added that over the period 2012 to 2014, all awardees did not opt to take advantage of the offer. Without specifying the names or examinations, Harmon pointed out that in 2012 only two top performers took up the scholarships.
The top CSEC performers of 2012 were Sarah Hakh of Abram Zuil Secondary with 16 grade one passes and Jessica Anthony of Queen’s College (QC) who gained 14 grade ones and two grade twos. At CAPE the top performers in 2012 were: Jonelle James and Christopher Chinnatambi, both of Queen’s College.
In 2013, three of the top performers took advantage of the scholarships, according to Harmon, who also revealed that the fourth top performing student is currently requesting of the Ministry of Education access to the scholarship.
The top CSEC performers in 2013 were Zimeena Rasheed who secured 20 CSEC passes, 18 grade ones and two grade twos, and Yogeeta Persaud who gained 18 grade one passes, both of the Anna Regina Multilateral School.
CAPE top performers in that year were Shalita Appadu of President’s College and Melodie Lowe of QC.
However, Harmon had disclosed that an admitted move by the former administration to narrow the scholarship offering resulted in none of the top performers taking advantage of the Government offer last year.
According to Harmon, scholarships last year were limited to the University of Guyana, China and Cuba. These were not accepted by the parents of the top performers, Harmon disclosed, as he revealed that at least one top performer had sought the Education Minister’s intervention on this matter.
Elisa Hamilton with 19 grade one passes and one grade two was named the top CSEC performer in 2014. The Queen’s College student had taken to Facebook to highlight her displeasure about the government’s decision to restrict its scholarship awards. Coming in second place that year was Bharti Bhoge of Skeldon Line Path Secondary School with 17 Grade Ones passes, along with QC’s Larissa Wiltshire.
Cecil Cox and Deowattie Narine, both of QC, claimed top performing places when the results of CAPE were announced in 2014.
